A Local Church

The Manchester South Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 13 Wilbraham Road in Fallowfield, has been the central branch of the Adventist faith in Manchester for more than 40 years.

The building, which was originally built to last a maximum of 25 years, opened on the evening of Friday 5th June 1959. The funds for its purchase were raised from the committed sacrificial giving by its then members.

Over the years the church has gone through many changes internally, but the building itself has remained the same.

The membership of the church stands at well over 225 members consisting of a good cross section of ages, social backgrounds and ethnicity.

A Growing Church

Seventh-day Adventist Churches literally circle the globe. Recent (1998) statistics show membership beyond 10.1 million worshipping in more than 44,000 congregations in 205 countries. (Note that there are only about 230 countries in the world!) The Church is increasing in net membership by about 7 percent every year - a high figure for a denomination its size.

A Caring Church

The Adventist Church also operates 162 hospitals, 361 clinics and dispensaries, and 127 nursing homes, retirement centres, orphanages and children's homes, that in a recent year served over 9 million people. In the UK our caring ministry includes Roundelwood in Scotland and "The Dell" in East Anglia.

A Teaching Church

In addition the Church runs a world-wide system of more than 5,450 schools with over 996,000 students from kindergarten to graduate professional schools. In the UK and Ireland we have 1 college, 2 secondary schools and 8 primary schools.

A Serving Church

In response to Christ's invitation to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, Seventh-day Adventists try
to help friends and neighbours in need irrespective of race, colour or religion. Internationally, the
Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) helps victims of war, famine, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. In addition, many Adventist congregations have community service facilities, from which volunteers help those in need close to home. In a recent year, Adventists helped nearly 14 million men, women and children. An annual camp is held in North Wales for handicapped children.

A Communicating Church

The Adventist Church also has a world-wide publishing ministry, with more than 57 publishing companies, printing scores of magazines and other publications in nearly 272 languages and dialects. Leading magazines in the United Kingdom include "Focus" - dealing with doctrine and prophecy from Scripture, and "Encounter", a specialised youth magazine. If you live in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland you can get a free sample of either of these publications by e-mailing the Communication Department of the British Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
